Love: The Unpayable Debt
This week we celebrate Valentine's Day filled with hearts and flowers and chocolate candy. All things red and pink bloom in stores and checkout lines. Whether you have a romantic love or plan to celebrate "Singles Awareness Day," I pray you have love of the family and friends to fill your life.
As I thought about verses to celebrate love, I ran across this week's verse from Romans 13. I've spent decades reading scripture and don't recall really processing this one before. A reminder that no matter how much time we spend in scripture, it continues to show us new directions each time we seek to find it.
This verse brings to mind the hymn "At the Cross" by Isaac Watts. The last verse reads:
But drops of grief can ne’er repay
The debt of love I owe:
Here, Lord, I give myself away,
’Tis all that I can do.
What a debt of love we owe!
We're blessed to be under the grace of the cross and not subject to the law, however, this verse reminds us that by loving others we are fulfilling the law.
This week as we celebrate romantic love and family love, I'm memorizing this verse as a reminder that no matter how well I love those around me, I'll never repay the debt of love I owe. And I'm okay with that.
